Why I Train.
Why the fuck do I do it?
There are a lot of reasons, but this isn’t a nerdy email about the benefits of exercise and why you should do it. That’s been shoved down our throats enough.
For me, one of the main reasons I train is because I love adventure and I love novelty. I love them for a lot of reasons, but I’ll touch on two.
Adventure lets me see new places and push myself, but I’m almost never doing it alone. I’m doing the volcano hike, the marathon, the surf session, jiu jitsu, the Grand Canyon with other people. People who value being able to do hard, meaningful things. And through the shared experience of doing those things together, we form deeper connections. Adventure strips away the bullshit of life and lets you connect in a raw, honest way.
When I look back at the core memories of my life, adventure + friends equals some of the best fucking times. Without training, a lot of those adventures wouldn’t be possible. My body would simply be incapable of stepping into those environments. That alone gives me massive motivation to stay sharp and dialed in. I want to keep making memories and deep connections with friends, and one day with my wife and kids.
I also train because of what novelty does for the brain.
When you’re a kid, everything is new. Everything is exciting. Then we get older and fall into the same routines day after day, week after week, year after year. That kind of life gives the brain and body zero signal to adapt. No “holy shit that was new” moment. And when adaptation stops, rigidity sets in.
The body stiffens and loses range of motion.
The mind gets stuck in the same patterns and becomes resistant to change.
Training gives me the confidence to say “fuck yes” to new things. And every time I say yes to novelty, I feed my brain and body the stimulus they crave. They’re forced to adapt. That keeps me feeling young.
So no, I don’t train to run a fast 5km, but I still run.
I don’t train to do 20 pull-ups, but I can.
I train because it makes my brain happy and supports every physiological system in my body.
And because it lets me say yes to adventure and novelty, which do more for my mental health and my connection to life than any metric ever could.
