The Pain Teacher
As my mentor Paul Chek often says, “The Pain Teacher” is one of the most important guides we will ever meet in life.
The Pain Teacher arrives when we’ve been living out of balance for too long. It shows up when our actions catch up with us, when it’s time to “pay the piper.” And while it may not feel like it at first, the Pain Teacher is not a punishment, it's a blessing. The key is learning to step back and ask
Why Has This Pain Shown Up In My Life?
Pain always begins with whispers. Small signals at first, tight muscles, restless sleep, mild cramps, shortness of breath. If those whispers are ignored, they grow louder. Eventually, they can become full-blown crises: the heart attack, the back injury, the autoimmune flare that “came out of nowhere.” But the truth is, almost nothing happens overnight.
Most heart attacks are preceded by years of weight gain, poor blood sugar control, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
Most back injuries come after months of pushing through soreness, ignoring fatigue, and numbing pain instead of addressing it.
Most digestive issues begin as mild bloating, rashes, or bathroom changes long before they spiral into chronic disease.
The Pain Teacher is never random. It’s your body’s innate intelligence saying, “Hey man, this way of living is not working. You’re hurting me, and I’m going to break down if you don’t change.”
Unfortunately, our culture teaches us to silence these messages: Advil for sore shoulders, Beta blockers for high blood pressure, ozempic instead of lifestyle change, another cup of coffee to mask the fatigue.
But every time we escape or numb instead of listening, we set ourselves up for deeper suffering later.
The real work is not to avoid the Pain Teacher, but to learn from it. When your shoulder aches, ask what your body needs to recover. When your stomach cramps, reflect on what food or lifestyle choice isn’t serving you. When your mind is anxious, depressed, or unsettled, don’t just mask it ask what the Pain Teacher is urging you to change.
Pain is not the enemy. It’s a guide, delivering small messages so that we can make changes before it's too late. Listen for your sake and the sake of your family.
Live. Your. Mystery.
